The Aronia plant produces dark purple, almost black, fruit clusters. Aronia have been an important and integral part of the native Indian diet for hundreds of years.
Aronia contains a high concentration of flavonoids and antioxidants. Aronia berries are full of flavonoids, trace minerals and phenolic phytochemicals, including anthocyanins, of which it contains one of the highest of any known plant (several times higher than cranberry juice). Some of these specific substances include cyanidin-3-galactoside, epicatechin, quercetin, caffeic acid, delphinidin, malvidin, petunidin, pelargonidin, and peonidin.
Aronia Health Benefits
Black Aronia is of the richest plant sources of phenolic substances, mainly anthocyanins glycosides of cyanidin. Anthocyanins are water soluble pigments accounting for the dark blue and almost black color of the fruit. The main active ingredients of "Viking" Black Aronia fruit are phenolic substances, mainly flavonoids from the anthocyanin subclass. Aronia is high in anthocyanins, antioxidants, flavonoids, phenolic acid, trace minerals and vitamin C.
What is Orac Value / Orac Score?
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, and in general terms, it's a measure of the antioxidant power in a given product or food. This Aronia powder is assigned an ORAC value, and it's basically the higher the better. Higher ORAC values mean the Aronia Berry Powder contains more antioxidant power, which in turn means it is very beneficial for fighting off the damaging oxygen radicals (i.e. free radicals.)
- The oxygen radical absorbency capacity or ORAC (measurement of the antioxidant strength of food items) demonstrates Aronia / Chokeberries with one of the highest values recorded among berries - 16,062 micromoles of Trolox Equivalents (TE) per 100 g.
- Black Aronia consist of significantly high amounts of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals called anthocyanins. Total anthocyanin content is 1480 mg per 100 g of fresh berries, and proanthocyanidin concentration is 664 mg per 100 g (Wu et al. 2004, 2006). Scientific studies have shown that consumption of berries on a regular basis offers potential health benefits against tumors, aging and neurological problems, inflammation, blood sugar, and bacterial infections. (- By Dr. Paul Gross, 2007-07-09).
- Laboratory analyses of anthocyanins in chokeberries have identified the following individual chemicals: cyanidin-3-galactoside, quercetin, peonidin, delphinidin, petunidin, epicatechin, caffeic acid, pelargonidin, and malvidin. These flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants have proven health benefits through scavenging dangerous oxygen-free radicals from the body.
When the human body converts oxygen into energy, free radicals are formed as natural by-products of this process, the overproduction of which cause damage to the body. Free radicals have an unpaired electron, which they try to find a match for by stealing an electron from something around it. This process, which is known as oxidation, causes harm to cells and literally makes our bodies rust and rot. In addition to the free radicals produced by the body’s metabolism, exposure to various environmental factors such as pollution, smoke and pesticides cause damage to our cells as well. Without proper nutrition, oxidation can wreak havoc in the body. Antioxidants prevent oxidation from happening. They clean up as many free radicals as possible by stabilizing the free radicals before damage occurs by giving up one of their electrons.
Mix 1 level teaspoon of Aronia with your favorite Smoothie or juice or even with milk.
It won't dissolve like an extract would, as this is just straight pure Aronia fruit powder.
Aronia can be added to anything. You can even bake with it.
